Abstract

The Upper Thames Patrol was a unique military unit. Created by enthusiasts and ci-vilian workers, it became one of the most unusual Home Guard units. As one of the few HG units, members of UPT were equipped with motor boats, yachts and many small crafts which, although poorly armed and lacking armor protection, became one of the most im-portant elements of every plan concerning evacuation of Londoners or the defence of the capital. Sadly, after the war they were overshadowed by the “little ships from Dunkirk” legend, but the UPT is steadilyreclaiming its place in history.
