Abstract

The third partition in 1795 eliminated Poland from the map of Europe for over 120 years. During that time Polish were forced to sail under a foreign flags. Many of Polish marines proved their high qualification and battle skills during the duty for the navies of foreign countries. One of such marines was Bogumił Nowotny. During the first world war he became famous because of his battle skills shown on the Adriatic Sea under the red-white-red flag. He is also commonly known as the first commander of the Polish Navy.
